- In order to be eligible to register to vote in Alabama, an applicant must:
- Be a United States Citizen
- Reside in Alabama
- Be at least 18 years old
- Have not been legally declared "mentally incompetent" by a court
- Eligibility for Ex-offenders

People with felony convictions involving crimes of "moral turpitude" – are barred from voting during the terms of their sentence or for life. Depending on the offense, they can re-apply to have their voting right restored upon completing their sentence, including prison, probation, parole and payment of fines or fees. In other cases, people are permanently disenfranchised. In the case of some minor felonies, the voter maintains their right to vote.
