- Eligibility to Register to Vote
- In order to be eligible to register to vote in the District of Columbia, an applicant must:
- Be a United States Citizen
- Reside in the District of Columbia (do not claim voting residence outside of the District of Columbia)
- Not be found by a court to be legally incompetent to vote
- Pre-Registration
- In the District of Columbia 16 year olds may pre-register to vote. The registration will become active as soon as the registrant turns 18.
- Eligibility for Ex-offenders
- Voting rights are automatically restored after release from prison. People on parole or probation can vote. Ex-offenders should re-register to vote.
- Registration Deadline
- Voter registration forms must be submitted by or postmarked 30 days before the election.
- Election Day Registration
- You may register to vote at your polling place on Election Day and vote a regular ballot. Contact your local elections office to learn more.
