- Eligibility to Register to Vote
- In order to be eligible to register to vote in New York, an applicant must:
- Be a United States Citizen
- Reside in New York at least 30 days before an election
- Be 18 years old by December 31 of the year in which you file an application (note: you must be 18 years old by the date of the general, primary or other election in which you want to vote)
- Not be adjudged mentally incompetent by a court
- Not claim the right to vote elsewhere
- Eligibility for Ex-offenders
- Voting rights are automatically restored after the completion of sentence including parole. People on probation can vote. Ex-offenders should re-register to vote.
- Registration Deadline
- Voter registration forms must be submitted by or postmarked 25 days before the election.
