- Eligibility to Register to Vote
- In order to be eligible to register to vote in Rhode Island, an applicant must:
- Be a United States Citizen
- Be a legal resident of Rhode Island
- Be at least 16 years of age (one must be 18 years of age or older to vote on Election Day)
- Not have been judged "mentally incompetent" in a court of law
- Pre-Registration
- In Rhode Island 16 year olds may pre-register to vote. The registration will become active as soon as the registrant turns 18.
- Eligibility for Ex-offenders
- Voting rights are automatically restored after release from prison. People on parole or probation can vote. Ex-offenders should re-register to vote.
- Registration Deadline
- Voter registration forms must be submitted by or postmarked 30 days before the election.
- Election Day Registration
- In a Presidential Election only, you may register to vote at your town hall or another designated site on Election Day and vote a presidential ballot. Contact your local elections office to learn more.
