Yesterday, Nebraska’s governor signed a bill (LB 661) into law that will enable online voter registration by the middle of 2015. The new system will also allow voters to update their registration information.
Governor Heineman said, “This is a huge, big step forward in terms of what we do with voter registration.”
Voters hoping to register online will need a valid driver’s license or ID card as the online system will link voter registrations to signatures provided to the Department of Motor Vehicles.
In addition to making it easier for voters, the system will also streamline registrations collected by the DMV, enabling them to submit forms electronically to election officials, rather than through the mail.
Nebraska is the 20th state to pass or implement full online voter registration. An additional six states offer limited online registration.
