Beyond their strong NVRD participation, the YWCA mobilized 18 affiliates in 17 states who contacted 2,811 individuals about registering and voting in the 2014 midterm. Over 1,000 of those contacts came from YWCA Minneapolis. The YWCA Asheville also expanded their efforts, holding a candidate forum in partnership with other community groups and collaborating on a voter guide.
Strong support from staff at the national YWCA USA office was key to recruiting local YWCA’s and in supporting their ongoing work. “So many of those we serve are less likely to vote in off-year elections. That is why it was important for us to ramp up our local voter education efforts with Nonprofit VOTE in 2014,” said Holly Jones, Director of Member Services. “Voter education is in the YWCA’s DNA. Partnering with Nonprofit VOTE was an incredible opportunity to re-introduce civic engagement to local YWCAs across the country.” Learn more about our state and national partners and how to become one.
