As we wrestle with the aftermath of Wednesday’s assault on the heart of our democracy, Nonprofit VOTE remains committed to a simple and sustaining principle: all eligible Americans have a right to have their voices heard at the ballot box. Each and every voice is crucial for creating a more representative democracy that reflects the diverse ideas and needs of our citizens.

Wednesday’s events were an attack on democracy itself — an affront to the voters that turned out in record numbers in 2020, and to the election officials who heroically administered a secure and trusted election in the face of unprecedented challenges. Those who fomented Wednesday’s attack should be held to account so this never happens again. This cannot be normalized. At the same time, we commend Congressional leaders for not cowering to intimidation and steadfastly returning to their duties to certify the results of the presidential election.

While our democracy has shown its resilience time and time again, its fragility has also been starkly revealed. This is precisely why we remain resolute in our commitment to working with and supporting nonprofit organizations across the country that work to ensure the voices of their communities are heard in the democratic process. We are here for them and we are here for you.
